THE SECRET TO A GREAT BASS TONE | Understanding Gain Structure
Просмотров 168 тыс.10 лет назад
This video will explain the meaning and importance of creating a good 'Gain Structure' on your amplifier. This technique will make your sound engineer very happy and they'll probably buy you a pint for knowing this. By sending a strong, clean signal to the Front of House (mixing desk/PA) there will be fewer problem frequencies for the engineer to deal with. This should make his job easier and a...

Here's an in-depth look at the features and tones available with the Boss OC-3 Super Octave pedal. The build quality is very sturdy, there are two settings dedicated to octaves including a Polyphonic setting. The addition of a drive setting sets this apart for me, it holds it's own against most distortion/fuzz pedals and can double as an octave'fuzz. The tracking is superb. just remember the go...

Erykah Badu - Back in the Day | Bass Tutorial

Here's a look at the bassline and effects from Erykah Badu's tune, Back in the Day. Although it may seem hard at first, try slowing down the fast passage of notes in the second half of the phrase, until your left hand is comfortable with it technically. There's no point trying to rush through the phrase as you won't get the feel of the track and it won't groove as tightly. For the effects side,...

They're great for emulating a double-bass sound and are very well suited for Bass heavy styles like Dub, Reggae, Soul and Ska etc. Once you've bought a set they are very hardy and don't wear as fast as normal s...

When you put it next to the bridge, strings dont get dampened evenly. Top and bottom strings get dampened much more than the others

Dumb question-isn’t the gain the input signal going into the preamp, pre-eq? And if so, why does the eq affect the gain light?

    • @jamola1096
      @jamola1096 11 месяцев назад

i don't know why but even in ampeg's videos they say you should readjust gain after boosting any EQ as it does affect how the gain behaves. if you set gain like he does in the video then boost the bass on the amp the peak light will be coming on and if you don't want that you have to lower the gain

Excellent video ! Just what I was looking for. I was playing a gig at my church tonight and need a mute on one song. I'd prefer doing the bridge mute, but now from your video I see I can do both bridge and nut methods. By the way, I once saw Victor Wooten use a mute. Like you said, if it's being used by the top players in the world, it's not "a cheat". Thank you!

very well explained , thank you , just one question . If an amp delivers 600 watts at 4 ohms , does that automatically means 300 watts at 8 ohms ? some amps specify it and some don't . Are we to assume that ?

Doesn't the gain stage occur before the EQ? Adjusting the EQ would therefore be completely independent from gain.

    • @jamola1096

you would think so but at least on these ampegs the EQ affects the gain and how the peak light behaves

2.33 where you teach us the rhythm in slow speed, then when you double up the speed, I don't think your playing the same rhythm. slow is 1g 1b 2g 2b repeats , fast 2g 2b, 2g 2b, repeat. At least that is what is seems to me. Cause when I almost get to the speed you're playing with the notes your showing at slow speed, the rythm is not even close... or there is something I am not understanding.

Hey man, I know this video is some years old but hoping you will still see my question. Great video, very clear. I am glad you also mentioned it can be used for a drum 'n bassy sound, which is what I am looking for, but it is hard to find infos about online. I am really looking for this deep and extendend dnb sound which a lot of dnb is played throughout the music (say e.g. the song ''Change'' by Maduk, wobbly bass sound starts at 1:27). Do you think the OC-3 will be sufficient for creating a sound with a similar feel? And if yes or no, do you recommend any other (maybe additional) components? Of the few things I have found online, some stated that a low pass filter as well as a Chorus pedal such as the CEB-3 with an OC-3 is a good combination. I am however not sure what the chorus effect would add to the sound as well as the low pass filter (which also seems a bit hard to implement - I can't really find much on this, other than a 500+ euro board which is way above my budget). Would be great if you have an answer to this, thanks man. :)

Hi, thanks for watching. I don't make these Vids anymore but I can definitely see what you're going for. The LPF is useful for keeping things subby, in a weird way I sort of see sound as shape and chorus spreads everything out. A bit like a watercolour painting so whilst a bit of it adds depth, too much in the direct chain will cause it to lose focus and attack. I switched over to a LINE6 POD HD500X a few years after this vid was made and got great results from being able to easily change the order of FX in the chain to experiment. Worth setting up an eBay alert for one if you're looking for something to experiment with 🙂

Great video! It reminds me of slapping, not in the sound, but rather rhythm. The origins of slap were because Larry Graham while playing with his mom, needed to fill in for the role of the drummer. Also, keeping a solid 1/8th or 1/16th note pattern (with played notes and ghost notes) makes it easier to stay in time.
